Privacy Policy

Effective 31 August 2026

1. Scope

This policy explains how MyKainga collects, uses, stores and shares personal information when you use the website, create an account, list or request a space, make or manage a booking, send messages, submit a report or contact support.

MyKainga intends to handle personal information consistently with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, as amended, and its information privacy principles.

2. Information we collect

  • Account: email, name, phone, profile photo, biography, role and sign-in identifiers.
  • Listings: space details, private street address, host contact details, photos, availability, price and rules.
  • Requests and bookings: dates, participants, preferences, booking status, price breakdown, payment-provider identifiers, cancellation and refund records.
  • Business applications: business name, NZBN if supplied, contact details, locations, crew size, dates and accommodation requirements.
  • Support, safety and trust: messages, reports, reviews, audit events and information supplied for a specific investigation.
  • Technical: security-relevant request information such as timestamps and hashed network identifiers used for rate limiting, fraud prevention and auditing.

Do not send identity documents, passwords, full card numbers or online-banking credentials through ordinary support or messaging forms.

3. How we collect information

We collect information directly from you, from other users interacting with a booking or report, automatically through platform operations, and from service providers that support authentication, hosting, storage and payment processing.

4. Why we use it

  • Operate accounts, listings, search, requests, bookings, payments, refunds and payouts.
  • Keep exact addresses and contact details out of public listing results.
  • Verify availability and pricing, prevent duplicate bookings and enforce platform rules.
  • Provide support, send transactional notices, investigate safety concerns, fraud and disputes.
  • Maintain audit records, rate limits, security, reliability and legal compliance.
  • Improve the service using appropriately limited operational information.

5. Public and private information

Active listings may publicly show the title, description, general area, category, features, availability, price, photos, ratings and approved reviews. Exact street address, host phone and host email are not intended to appear in public search or listing data.

Hosts and guests can access booking records connected to their own account. Administrators may access information where needed for support, safety, fraud, payments, moderation and platform operations.

6. Service providers and overseas disclosure

MyKainga uses providers including Base44 for application infrastructure and Stripe for payment processing. Those providers process information under their own contracts and privacy terms and may process data outside New Zealand. We may also disclose information where authorised or required by law, or to prevent serious threats, fraud or misuse.

MyKainga does not sell personal information. If a future advertising or analytics practice materially changes how information is shared, this policy and any required choices must be updated first.

7. Payment information

Card entry is handled by Stripe’s hosted checkout. MyKainga stores payment and session identifiers and booking amounts needed to confirm, refund and reconcile transactions; it is not designed to store full card numbers.

8. Storage, security and retention

Reasonable safeguards are used to reduce unauthorised access, alteration, loss or disclosure. No internet service can promise absolute security. Information is retained only as long as reasonably needed for platform operation, bookings, tax and accounting, disputes, fraud prevention, safety and legal duties, after which it should be deleted or de-identified where practical.

9. Access, correction and deletion requests

You may ask for access to or correction of personal information MyKainga holds about you, subject to lawful exceptions. You may also request account deletion, but some booking, payment, audit, dispute or legal records may need to be retained.

Submit a privacy request through the authenticated Support page. MyKainga may need to verify your identity before acting.

10. Cookies and local storage

The platform and its providers may use session cookies or similar storage needed for authentication, security and preferences. The listing form may save a draft in the browser under an account-specific key. Old or mismatched drafts are cleared; a submitted draft is removed.

11. Children

MyKainga is not intended for people under 18, and minors may not independently create listings or bookings.

12. Breaches, complaints and changes

MyKainga will assess suspected privacy breaches and make notifications where required. Raise a concern through Support. You may also contact the New Zealand Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

This policy may be updated prospectively. The effective date above will change when material revisions are published.

Official guidance: New Zealand Privacy Act principles.
